Mayor Eric Garcetti's launches WiSTEM L.A. mentorship and networking initiative

WiSTEM LA: A Celebration of Women Leading the Cutting Edge in STEM Fields Across L.A.

Los Angeles is a leader in STEM innovation. It is imperative that we be the model for ensuring our leading industries are honoring the ethos of equality and access to all. UCLA is partnering with other local colleges, high schools, industry, and nonprofits in supporting May Garcetti's WiSTEM L.A. initative to empower a generation of women to lead L.A.’s STEM revolution through mentorship, networking, and community building.

The WiSTEM L.A. initiative will provide opportunities for women of all levels of experience to engage:

  • Pilot year college-to-professional mentorship matchmaking, which will pair 150 undergraduate and graduate school students majoring in STEM disciplines with women in a variety of STEM-driven industries;
  • Professional Networking events to be held twice in the pilot year, featuring facilitated conversation by Ladies Get Paid on (1) achieving pay equity, and (2) increasing female representation in boards and positions of leadership; and
  • Non-profit site tours for cohorts of participants in DIY Girls and Girls Build LA to be able to see firsthand what it is like to work at some of LA's most exciting companies.

To kickoff the WiSTEM Initiative, Mayor Garcetti is hosting a Celebration of Women in STEM at LACMA’s Bing Theater on September 15th.
