Breaking Through Barriers: Strategies to Advance Women in Tech

Tuesday, May 22, 2018 , 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Dinner starts at 6:00 pm

Conference Objectives

The UCLA Women in Tech Conference and Dinner will convene 250+ female influencers and decision makers in tech companies, teams, or roles for a collaborative discussion to reframe how we think and what we do about the gender and diversity gap in the tech sector. We will explore ways to advance women of all ethnicities, leadership levels, backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses by addressing three of the most requested topics for strategic discussion by women across all industries: leadership and empowerment, negotiation strategies, and diversity and inclusion. We welcome full participation by both women and men in order to work together on this issue.

Intended Participants

The Conference to Advance Women in Technology is a collaborative setting to promote best practices to advance equitable work environments that take advantage of their full human capital potential. We always welcome women and men who want to be part of solutions to create tech workplaces that foster diversity, inclusion and innovation.

This event brings together those most directly able to help female tech employees and entrepreneurs thrive. These include:

  • Corporate leaders and employees
  • Entrepreneurs, startups and startup support institutions (incubators, accelerators, etc.)
  • Non-profit leaders and advocates

CLOSING REMARKS

A Real Discussion on Leadership and Empowerment

How do women move into leadership positions and what does “in charge” really mean?  This is a discussion led by two influential female CEOs, Lea Endres (NationBuilder) and Mary LeBlanc (Bridger Val Associates LLC), who will provide valuable insight on how they integrate diversity into the thread of their companies, inspire others to embrace their inner leader, and showcase the possibilities for women to successfully lead themselves and their organizations.

Plenary 1. Effective Negotiation Strategies

A closed mouth does not get fed.  Women in technological fields are still paid far less than their male counterparts.  Learn how to ask for what you want and need in today’s competitive environment.  Expert negotiators from Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), NBCUniversal, UCLA Anderson School of Management, and Northrup Grumman will explore what it takes to obtain better opportunities, overcome barriers, and advance your careers and organizations.

Plenary 2. Creating a Culture of Diversity and Inclusion

Understand the keys to increasing the competitive advantage of your team and organization. There is implicit bias against races, backgrounds, and socioeconomic statuses in technological fields which negatively impact the culture and hiring process. The panel will discuss the challenges in today’s society and offer systematic proven solutions to create a diverse and inclusive culture. Learn real life examples that are relatable for you to take action in your organization.
